If you live in one of Calgary’s many growing communities, you may be seeing a welcome sight in the neighborhood: a new school. In fact, nine new schools are expected to open in September 2016 with an additional eight schools planned to open in January 2017. A new school creates a lot of excitement in a community, but can also generate many questions from parents and residents: What grades will be in the school? Who is the principal? Will there be a playground? What are the bell times?
To help you easily find answers to some of your questions, a webpage has been created for each school construction project. At cbe.ab.ca/schools, click on ‘Building and Modernizing Schools’ where you can find information on the construction status, frequently asked questions and important information for the school community.
Registering for a new school
One of the most common questions is: How do I register for a school that’s under construction? If your child is four years old on or before March 1, 2016, you can register them to start Kindergarten in September 2016. Registration is currently taking place at your community’s designated school. If the school in your community is under construction, please see the chart for the name of the school where you can go to register.
Registering your child as soon as possible helps our principals plan and prepare accordingly for the new school year. Students currently attending their designated regular program school will automatically be transferred to the new school when it opens.

Getting 17 new schools planned, built and ready for students is an enormous undertaking. Leading up to these openings, principals will meet with parents and students in the new school communities, hire staff, determine the organization of the school and prepare the school budget for the 2016 to 2017 school year.
Before- and after-care
Your family may also be making plans and arrangements for the next school year. Before- and after-school care is a decision many parents make in the Spring. Like our existing schools, before- and after-school care programs may be offered by a third-party operator in new schools where space permits. The Calgary Board of Education will be working with the school community and third-party operators regarding interest in child care programs in all of the new elementary schools.
Get involved
As we look ahead to the next school year, we know that having the support of parents and the community is essential in making our new school openings a success. You can get involved at your school, whether it’s existing or new, by becoming a volunteer, joining the parent council or being a part of a parent society or association. Volunteers help to make our schools great places of learning for all children.
