Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary and Area’s Adult in-school mentoring programs match six- to 12-year-old children and youth with mentors, fostering intentional, evidence-based mentoring relationships which help mentees become more resilient and successful. The Teen school-based mentoring program matches elementary-aged children with teens from local junior and senior high schools. Their weekly meetings are supported in their school with supervision by a mentoring coordinator. BTLC uses the established and well-researched principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) to teach preschool and Kindergarten students with the unique learning needs and challenges associated with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder. BTLC’s success is based on small class size, intensive and individualized programming using effective, research-based teaching strategies, a high ratio of adult support, and opportunities for integration in community schools.
